Imagine trying to set up complex software like Open Broadcasting Software (OBS) without any guidance. Overwhelming, right? That was my task last weekend. But thanks to several clear and concise YouTube tutorials, I not only set up the software successfully but also optimized it for my needs. This experience underscores the power of video learning, which replicates the intuitive way we acquire skills in real life—watching, learning, and then doing.

How many of you have done something similar recently? What is the latest thing you have learned from YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram Reel?

So, two questions, how do we take this key strategy and apply it to our learning environments, and WHY aren’t we doing it more often?

The Power of Video in eLearning

Video has transformed educational methodologies by aligning with our natural learning tendencies—those quick YouTube tutorials, TikTok snippets, or Instagram Reels that show rather than tell. In eLearning, incorporating videos can drastically enhance learner engagement and retention. From demonstrating a process to storytelling through animation, video caters to various learning preferences and needs.

Tools for Creating Engaging Videos

  1. Vyond: Ideal for creating animated videos that tell a story or explain complex concepts in a simple, engaging way. Has AI built into the tool
    • How I am using it: I am currently doing this to introduce learners to Marketing 101. I am using Vyond videos to create a real-world story/scenario that connects the content in a more engaging way.
  2. Camtasia: Perfect for screen recording and video editing, making it a go-to for tutorials or software demonstrations.
    • How I am using it: I am using Camtasia Rev to prepare short video tutorials on Canva. It is so easy to use and creates content so quickly.

  3. Canva: Offers a user-friendly platform to create light animations and video content that can make your lessons visually appealing. It also has AI (Canva Magic) built into the tool, plus background remover, and hundreds of free video clips ready to use.
    • How I am using it: I am currently using Canva for that same Marketing 101 course to create short animations that introduce each module. I am also using it to animate more complex concepts and adding voiceover.

  4. Your Smartphone: Sometimes, the best tool is in your pocket. Smartphones can produce high-quality, personal videos that are great for connecting with learners on a more authentic level.
    • How I am using it: I use my Smartphone daily to record view talking directly to my audience, my learners, and set the context for what might be coming in a learning video or screen recording. I also use my phone to quickly create a screen recording for my learners.

Side note: I am not even covering new AI tools that create videos. Those are amazing and changing every day. Here are some worth checking out: Descript, OpusClip, Synthesia, Runway, and the list goes on and on.

Applying Video Wisely in eLearning

Not every eLearning module needs a video, but knowing when and how to use video can make a big difference. For instance, use narrative videos to break down complex information, demonstration videos for step-by-step processes, and animated videos to add a fun twist to learning.

And I can’t leave out that video is also a great addition to VILT (Virtual Instructor Led Training) too. Think about your content and are there some opportunities to incorporate some video to really drive home important content? Maybe you could share a Vyond interaction between two characters, and ask learners to identify strategies that the characters used in their conversation that you have just taught? Oh, so many possibilities here…

Just like my journey learning OBS, eLearning should be about creating memorable, effective, and accessible educational experiences. With tools like Vyond, Camtasia, and Canva, and the phone in your pocket, you’re equipped to transform traditional learning into a dynamic, online experiences.
